A new study suggests that a drug commonly used to treat a type of age-related macular degeneration may in fact increase the risk of severe side effects, including vision loss.The study, led by Dr. Sanjay Sharma, a professor of ophthalmology at Queen's University in Kingston, Ont., found that patients who were treated with the drug Avastin had a 12-fold increase in the risk of developing severe inflammation.
