When the water in tears evaporates faster than it should, the eye begins to itch and vision begins to blur. The cause can often be traced to the meibomian gland, which normally secretes lipids that protect tears on the eye surface from evaporation. Without these lipids, tears evaporate quickly and the surface of the eye dries. Last July, the US Food and Drug Administration approved the LipiFlow Thermal Pulsation device to unclog the meibomian gland. Developed by TearScience of Morrisville, North Carolina, the device promises help for Americans whose dry eye disease is caused by dysfunction of this gland.
