Eye care physicians are at particular risk for several forms of musculoskeletal disorders compared with family medicine physicians, according to new research. the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, and colleagues found that hand/wrist, neck, and lower back pain were more common among eye physicians, who reported that several job factors contributed to their musculoskeletal symptoms. Eye care providers reported a significantly greater prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms than did family medicine physicians, including neck pain (46% vs 21%; P< .01), hand/wrist pain (17% vs 7%; P = .03), and lower back pain (26% vs 9%; P< .01). There were no differences in the prevalence of shoulder, elbow, or upper back symptoms.
