There are too few ophthalmologists in both developing and developed countries, although projections paint a slightly rosier picture for the developed countries, where the number of ophthalmologists is increasing, although not as fast as the population of patients aged 60 years or older who require increased ophthalmology care.Serge Resnikoff, MD, PhD, from International Health and Development in Geneva, Switzerland, and colleagues provided the results of their survey that found that there are 204,909 ophthalmologists worldwide. The increasing need for ophthalmologists is partly a reflection of the aging population, for whom eye exams remain an important aspect of healthcare.
