The first study to examine the presence of retinal hemorrhages in a population of critically ill children who have not been abused has found that the most severe kind of hemorrhage, which is often found in cases of child abuse, is rare.The prospective observational study, which was published online May 21 and in the June print issue of Pediatrics, examined 159 critically ill children (aged from 6 weeks to 16 years; median age, 18 months) who were admitted to an emergency intensive care unit between February 2008 and December 2009.
