Whether they are motivated by their own observations, prodded by concerned family members, or are referred patients who fail the visual acuity portion of a driving test, vision care providers (VCPs) are having essential conversations about the emotionally loaded topic of whether older patients should continue to drive, according to 2 papers published online October 8 in the Archives of Ophthalmology. More than 80% of VCPs in Michigan are confident in their ability to determine whether their patients' vision is adequate for driving, although the potential for being sued (for reporting or for failing to report unsafe drivers) is a barrier, according to the first article, by Rebecca L. Leinberger, MPH, from the Department of Health Behavior and the Department of Health Education at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and colleagues.
