Vision loss on the rise in U.S.

Research from Johns Hopkins University indicates a worrisome increase in vision loss among Americans over the age of 40. The rate has gone up 23% since 2000, according to the report commissioned by Prevent Blindness America (PBA) and the U.S. National Eye Institute (NEI). Details were presented to an eye health summit in Washington, D.C. Some of the key conclusions, reported by MedicalNewsToday.com, include:
- A 25% increase in age-related macular degeneration among those 50 or older
- A 19% increase in cataracts among those 40 or older
- A 22% increase in open-angle glaucoma among the 40-plus population
- An astonishing 89% increase in diabetic retinopathy among those 40 and older
