Paracentral acute middle maculopathy is a newly identified variant of acute macular neuroretinopathy that appears to result from retinal capillary ischemia, according to a retrospective observational case series. "This has been traditionally a very rare disease but now with advanced retinal imaging systems such as spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Dr. David Sarraf from the University of Calif With SD-OCT, physicians can see disruptions of the inner segment/outer segment band of the macula, originally known as acute macular neuroretinopathy (AMN), but recently proposed to be renamed acute macular outer retinopathy. Dr. Sarraf and colleagues identified nine patients (11 eyes) with a novel presentation of AMN in which lesions occurred above the outer plexiform layer (OPL) in the middle macular region.
