Sterilizing filters adapted to conventional containers cuts contamination rates of autologous serum eyedrops, new research shows.Autologous serum eyedrops are used to manage persistent epithelial defects and other corneal epithelialization disorders. These preparations do not contain preservatives, which could cause ocular surface damage, so they are easily contaminated, limiting their lifespan to around 7 days. The researchers compared 48 containers with adapted sterilizing filters (Hyabak, Thea Pharma) with 128 conventional containers without a filter (Bexen, Oiarso S. Coop); they distributed the containers randomly among 30 patients with Sjogreneye syndrome.
